Bible. Old Testament. Book of Ecclesiastes or the Preacher. Chapter 7
Chapter 7
A good name is better than an expensive suit, and the day of death is better than the day of birth.
It is better to go to a house of mourning for the dead than to go to a house of feasting; for such is the end of every man, and the living shall add [it] to his heart.
Mourning is better than laughter; because the sadness of the face makes the heart better.
The heart of the wise is in a house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in a house of mirth.
It is better to hear reproofs from a wise man than to hear the songs of fools;
For the laughter of fools is like the crackling of thorns under a kettle. And this is vanity!
By oppressing others, the wise become foolish, and gifts spoil the heart.
The end of a thing is better than its beginning; patient is better than arrogant.
Do not be hasty in your spirit to anger, for anger nestles in the heart of fools.
Do not say, “Why were the former days better than the present?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.
Good is wisdom with inheritance, and especially for those who see the sun:
because under her shade [the same as] under the shade of silver; but the excellence of knowledge lies in [that] wisdom gives life to those who possess it.
Look at the work of God: for who can straighten out what He has made crooked?
In the days of prosperity, take advantage of the good, and in the days of adversity, consider: God did both so that man could not say anything against him.
I have seen everything in my vain days: the righteous perish in their righteousness; the wicked live long in their wickedness.
Do not be too strict, and do not make yourself too wise; why would you ruin yourself?
Do not indulge in sin, and do not be foolish: why should you die at the wrong time?
It is good if you hold on to one and do not take your hands off the other; for whoever fears God will avoid all that.
Wisdom makes a wise man stronger than ten rulers who are in the city.
There is no righteous man on earth who does good and does not sin;
therefore pay no heed to every word that is spoken, lest you hear your servant when he speaks evil of you;
For your heart knows many times when you yourself have cursed others.
All this I experienced with wisdom; I said: "I will be wise"; but wisdom is far from me.
Far is that which was, and deep, deep: who can comprehend it?
I turned in my heart to know, to search and seek wisdom and understanding, and to know the wickedness of stupidity, ignorance and foolishness,
And I found that a woman is bitterer than death, because she is a snare, and her heart is a snare, her hands are shackles; the good before God will be saved from her, but the sinner will be caught by her.
This is what I found, said the Ecclesiastes, testing one after the other.
What else did my soul seek, and I did not find? “I found one man out of a thousand, but I did not find a woman among all of them.
Only this I found that God created man upright, and people set off in many thoughts.
